The average cost of website design for small business

If you suddenly realize “I need a website” for your business or personal need, you will have to think about the following:

  • What would you like to achieve with a website?
  • What is the budget you can allocate for this project?
  • Should you hire website designers for small businesses or an expert design company?

The small business web design companies listed above charge from $5000 to $25000 per project, according to Clutch. However, small business website design costs can vary based on many factors, such as your design partner’s location, expertise, and services you’d like to buy.

We know what you might be thinking now, why not order a small business website design from a contractor and pay less? You are right, but only to some extent!

There are indeed lots of freelancers who could help you do it. However, do you know if you can trust them? Startups and established brands choose to partner with design agencies because they are reliable.

Once you share your challenges and goals, a team of dedicated experts takes care of your website design. You can reach out to them with your questions anytime, and you will always get a prompt response.

The old saying “two heads are better than one” applies here. A design agency with experts from multiple disciplines provides more valuable insights than an independent freelancer.

At UX studio, for instance, we dedicate a UX researcher and a designer to work on your product. Our UX researcher assesses your website’s usability and conducts interviews with your target audience. Valuable insights are passed over to a designer who implements suggestions while designing your product. The result is a digital product that meets your users’ and your business’ needs.

If you strive to create something big or would like to redesign your current product, make sure you know where to invest your time and money. Many companies offer affordable small business website design and dedicate the most suitable experts to help you reach your goals.

Should you need help with small business website design, contact us. We have developed efficient remote working processes that let us collaborate with clients all over the world. We are ready to discuss your challenges and help you bring your business ideas to the next level.

Creating a website for your business

A website redesign should not take much. Right? It usually takes one to three months, depending on the content and purpose. However, our UX team worked three times longer to help our client Trigo, a quality solutions provider, with business website design.

Trigo has more than 10.000 employees worldwide, and it is the world’s biggest player in the quality sector. Trigo offers a comprehensive portfolio of inspection and management services to various supply chains.

We collaborated with Trigo’s marketing team to redesign their business website. Here is the step-by-step process of what we did to design new digital experiences.

Objectives

The old website didn’t meet business requirements, which meant it needed a complete redesign.

Our UX researcher worked to discover peoples’ needs and align them with the business goals. While, our UX designer was dealing with design solutions and artboards and communicated with developers.

Below, you can see our detailed project plan.

Small business website redesign project plan

1. Discovery phase

We first focused on the goals and functionality of Trigo’s business website. During the discovery phase, we did the following:

  • Market analysis and product research.
  • User experience research and concepts ideation.
  • We have created and delivered the look and feels, artboards, and design sketches.

Research insights helped us create the first website design prototype in Axure.

2. Design phase

Our team continued working on the product design, testing new interfaces with the actual users, and fixing pain points.

We held multiple in-house and client meetings during this phase. During the meetings, new ideas and even new business goals came up that we needed to incorporate into the design.

Here’s how the old TRIGO website looked like compared to our redesigned UI.

3. Development phase

When we reached this phase, we had 99% of the design ready and needed to fine-tune what was left. Our work was not finished at this moment.  A powerful design takes technical limitations and solutions into account.

During the final two months of the collaboration, we did follow-up development and made design changes where they were needed.

Our main takeaways and website design tips for small businesses  based on our Trigo project are the following:

  • Creating a new website design is a long and challenging process.
  • Plan redesign changes from the very beginning and makes sure it’s not only a facelift.
  • Holy trinity: user needs, business requirements, and technology.
  • Involve developers as soon as possible.

If you, too, are looking for a partner to address your design challenges, contact us and book a free consultation with our team. We will discuss your current goals, requirements and define the next steps.

Web design services for small businesses

If you want to design a new business website or update the old one, start with why.

  • Why do I need to update my former business website design? (It’s old)
  • Why do I consider it old? (It does not work as it should)
  • Why doesn’t it meet my business goals? (Users view product pages and leave)
  • Why do users drop from my website’s product pages? (I don’t know)

Do you see how the initial focus shifted from “I need a redesign” to “I don’t know why users drop from my website’s product pages?” It’s clear that a facelift might not help with this issue and something else is needed.

Likely, you don’t have to struggle all alone when it comes to defining your digital product’s challenges. There are particular web design services for small businesses and enterprises that can help you effectively leverage your needs.

UX audit

A user experience audit helps to assess the current user interface of your product. It’s a handy tool if you would like to discover the main pain points before redesigning your website or app.

UX audit insights can help you answer some of the most profound questions related to your product’s performance:

  • Where do your users experience navigation difficulty and misunderstand functionality?
  • What does the analytics data reveal about your users’ behavior?
  • What can potentially be changed to improve your user experience?

At UX studio, we conduct usability tests with the actual users to collect valuable insights and answer all the questions above.

Based on UX research standards, five-user tests are enough to reveal 80% of usability problems.

UX research

UX research is a broader analysis that investigates both your product’s current state and future business opportunities.

Research insights will help you know your customers’ needs better, improve their satisfaction, increase your product’s conversion rate, and prioritize your development efforts.

At UX studio, we dedicate a UX researcher to continuously work as a part of your team and assist at any stage of your product development cycle. We can do user interviews or test prototypes and make suggestions on how to implement research findings effectively.

Small business website design

At UX studio, we are convinced that a synergy of user experience design and research creates products people love to use.

Researchers test hypotheses and collect feedback from actual users, while designers implement research findings during their work. Otherwise, how can you make sure your design solution will work? You might update your website’s UI, but the usability issues won’t disappear.

Don’t get spoiled by the cheap design offers from individuals or agencies. Remember, a good design is never cheap and your investment will pay off in the long run.

As Dr. Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, once well-said:

“If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad design.”

If you don’t know what’s the most suitable service for your particular case, contact us to book a free consultation. We will discuss your current challenges and business goals and define a customized plan with the right next steps.
